What Are Novolac and Chemical-Resistant Floor Coatings?

Chemical-resistant flooring uses specialized resin chemistry to protect concrete from substances that could stain, soften, dissolve or otherwise damage a conventional floor coating. A complete system may include a compatible primer, high-build body coat, broadcast aggregate, reinforced lining, cove base and chemical-resistant topcoat.

Novolac epoxy is a highly cross-linked form of epoxy designed to provide greater resistance to certain acids, solvents and industrial chemicals than general-purpose epoxy. Depending on the product, it may be installed as a stand-alone coating, as the topcoat over another flooring system, or as the binder in a slurry or aggregate-broadcast build.

Applications can include chemical-processing areas, battery charging rooms, laboratories, wastewater facilities, food-production cleaning zones, industrial maintenance areas, chemical storage and secondary containment. Novolac is not universally resistant to every chemical, so the product must be selected using current manufacturer resistance data.

PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS

Chemical Names Alone Do Not Determine the System

Compatibility depends on the chemical, concentration, temperature, exposure duration and whether contact is occasional, repeated or continuous. A diluted cleaning solution at room temperature can affect flooring differently from a concentrated chemical used in a heated process.

Mixtures, process by-products and cleaning procedures must also be considered. The selected floor should be checked against the exact chemicals used by the facility rather than relying on a general claim of “chemical resistance.”

The system must reach its required cure before chemical exposure begins. Surface preparation, moisture, existing contamination, cracks, joints, drainage and containment details also affect the performance of the completed installation.

Protecting Concrete from Aggressive Facility Exposures

Specialized coatings are considered when ordinary concrete or general-purpose flooring cannot provide adequate resistance to the substances used or stored in the facility.

Processing acids, caustic cleaners and alkaline solutions can attack concrete or unsuitable coatings. A compatible novolac or other chemical-resistant system can create a protective barrier for the underlying substrate.

Solvents, Fuels and Industrial Fluids

Solvents, fuels, lubricants and process fluids can soften, stain or delaminate incompatible flooring. The system must be checked against each material and its expected contact time.

Battery Charging and Storage Areas

Forklift and equipment battery areas may be exposed to corrosive electrolyte spills. Chemical-resistant flooring can protect concrete around charging stations when the system is selected for the specific battery chemistry.

Aggressive Cleaning Procedures

Clean-in-place processes, sanitizers, degreasers and concentrated cleaning products can expose floors to combinations of chemicals and elevated temperatures. Both the flooring chemistry and thermal conditions must be evaluated.

Secondary Containment Requirements

Curbs, containment areas and storage zones may need a continuous lining across floors, walls and transitions to help contain accidental releases and protect the surrounding concrete.

Premature Coating Deterioration

Discolouration, softening, blistering and loss of adhesion may indicate chemical incompatibility, insufficient cure, unsuitable thickness or substrate contamination. The cause should be identified before the replacement system is selected.

Commercial laboratories, healthcare support spaces, institutional maintenance areas and service facilities may handle disinfectants, cleaning chemicals, fuels, oils or other substances capable of damaging an ordinary floor finish.

Automotive dealerships and repair facilities may need chemical-resistant protection around service bays, fluid storage, parts-cleaning areas and battery charging stations. Different operational zones may require different flooring systems rather than one coating throughout the property.

Commercial kitchens and food-service properties may also encounter acids, grease, degreasers and sanitation chemicals. Where hot washdowns and thermal shock are significant, urethane cement may be more appropriate than novolac epoxy alone.

Novolac systems can be used as high-build coatings, broadcast floors or protective topcoats where their resistance profile matches the facility’s chemicals. Floors, curbs, walls, trenches and equipment bases may need to be treated as one coordinated protective system.

Facilities with particularly aggressive oxidizing chemicals, solvents, high temperatures or immersion conditions may require vinyl ester, polyester, reinforced linings or another specialized material. Manufacturer resistance data and facility chemical information should guide the final selection.

Specialized Workshops and Chemical Storage Areas

Most residential garages, basements and interior concrete floors do not require novolac flooring. A general epoxy, decorative flake or polyaspartic coating will usually provide a more appropriate residential finish.

A chemical-resistant system may be considered for a private automotive workshop, equipment-maintenance area or specialized storage space where the concrete is regularly exposed to fuels, solvents, acids or other aggressive materials.

Questions About Novolac and Chemical-Resistant Coatings

Chemical resistance must be evaluated against the exact substances and conditions present in the facility.

What is a novolac epoxy floor coating?

Novolac epoxy is a highly cross-linked epoxy chemistry designed to provide greater resistance to certain acids, solvents and industrial chemicals than a general-purpose epoxy. It may be installed as a coating, topcoat, slurry, broadcast system or protective lining.

Is novolac the same as standard epoxy flooring?

No. Both are epoxy-based, but novolac resin has a different molecular structure and a higher degree of cross-linking. This can provide improved resistance to particular chemicals and elevated temperatures, depending on the product.

Is novolac resistant to every chemical?

No flooring material resists every chemical under every condition. Compatibility depends on the chemical, concentration, temperature, contact time and whether exposure involves splashes, repeated spills or continuous immersion. Current manufacturer resistance data must be reviewed.

What information is needed to select a chemical-resistant floor?

Does the coating need to cure before chemical exposure?
