What is a vinyl ester coating?
Vinyl ester is a reactive resin chemistry used to create chemically and thermally resistant coatings, surfacing systems and linings. It may be installed over properly prepared concrete or steel as a smooth coating, aggregate build or reinforced lining.
How is vinyl ester different from epoxy?
Vinyl ester uses a different curing mechanism and may provide greater resistance to particular acids, solvents, oxidizing chemicals and elevated temperatures. Epoxy generally offers easier installation and is suitable for a broader range of ordinary flooring applications.
What is the difference between vinyl ester and polyester?
Both are reactive resin families, but vinyl ester generally provides greater toughness and resistance to a wider range of aggressive chemicals. Polyester products may be used as primers, mortars, base layers or linings when their properties match the application.
Where are vinyl ester systems used?
Applications can include chemical plants, pulp and paper facilities, wastewater treatment, food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, tank linings, industrial floors and secondary containment.
Is vinyl ester resistant to every acid and solvent?
No. Resistance depends on the specific resin formulation, chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure time. The proposed product must be checked against current manufacturer chemical-resistance data.
Can vinyl ester resist elevated temperatures?
Certain vinyl ester products are formulated for higher dry-service temperatures and hot chemical exposure. Temperature limits vary significantly and can change depending on whether service is dry, wet or involves a particular chemical.
What is a glass-flake lining?
Glass flakes are incorporated into compatible resin to create a more difficult pathway through the lining. This can reduce permeation and improve barrier protection in certain chemical or immersion applications.
When is fibreglass reinforcement used?
Fibreglass fabric or mat may be incorporated where the lining needs additional thickness, reinforcement or crack-bridging capability. The reinforcement and resin must be compatible with the chemical and operating environment.
Can vinyl ester be used for secondary containment?
Yes, compatible vinyl ester systems can line floors, curbs, walls, sumps and trenches in secondary containment areas. The complete design must account for the stored chemical, required hold time, joints, penetrations and structural condition.
Can vinyl ester be installed over damp concrete?
Vinyl ester generally requires carefully controlled substrate conditions and may not bond reliably to damp concrete without the correct compatible primer. Moisture testing and the manufacturer’s specified primer system are important parts of installation.
Does vinyl ester have an odour during installation?
Many vinyl ester and polyester materials have a noticeable odour while uncured. The work area may require isolation and mechanical ventilation, and all product-specific requirements for vapours, ignition sources and personal protection must be followed.
