What Are Vinyl Ester and Polyester Coating Systems?

Vinyl ester and polyester resins are used to create specialized coatings, toppings and linings for concrete or steel exposed to conditions that may exceed the limits of conventional epoxy, polyurethane or other general-purpose flooring systems.

Vinyl ester systems are frequently selected for resistance to aggressive acids, solvents, oxidizing chemicals and elevated temperatures. Depending on the product and design, the material may be installed as a smooth coating, aggregate-broadcast surface, glass-flake barrier or reinforced lining using fibreglass or another compatible reinforcement.

Polyester materials may be used as primers, base layers, mortars or protective systems where their adhesion, chemical resistance and mechanical properties match the project. These systems are most commonly associated with chemical processing, wastewater, pulp and paper, industrial manufacturing, tank linings and secondary containment.

Specialized Chemistry Requires Specialized Installation

Vinyl ester and polyester products can have short working times and specific requirements for temperature, moisture, ventilation, mixing and successive coats. The entire application must follow the current product data and safety instructions.

Some materials produce strong odours or contain flammable components before they cure. Work areas may need isolation, mechanical ventilation and strict control of flames, sparks, smoking and unsuitable electrical equipment.

Chemical compatibility must be confirmed using the exact chemical, concentration, temperature and exposure duration. A product selected for occasional splashes may not be suitable for continuous immersion or long-term containment.

Vinyl ester and polyester systems are rarely needed in a home. Residential garages, basements, workshops and interior floors are normally better served by epoxy, decorative flake or polyaspartic coatings.

What is a vinyl ester coating?

Vinyl ester is a reactive resin chemistry used to create chemically and thermally resistant coatings, surfacing systems and linings. It may be installed over properly prepared concrete or steel as a smooth coating, aggregate build or reinforced lining.

How is vinyl ester different from epoxy?

Vinyl ester uses a different curing mechanism and may provide greater resistance to particular acids, solvents, oxidizing chemicals and elevated temperatures. Epoxy generally offers easier installation and is suitable for a broader range of ordinary flooring applications.

What is the difference between vinyl ester and polyester?
