What Is Urethane Cement Flooring and Why Might It Be Needed?

Urethane cement flooring—also called cementitious urethane or polyurethane mortar—is a heavy-duty resin flooring system that combines a water-based polyurethane binder with cement and graded aggregate. Depending on the product and specification, it may be installed as a self-levelling slurry, textured broadcast system or trowel-applied mortar.

The material is commonly selected for wet processing environments where the floor must tolerate rapid temperature changes, cleaning chemicals, food acids, oils, impact and heavy traffic. Its thermal expansion characteristics can be better suited to hot washdowns, cold rooms and processing conditions than conventional epoxy flooring.

Food and beverage plants, breweries, cideries, wineries, commercial kitchens, cold-storage areas, pharmaceutical facilities and demanding manufacturing spaces are common applications. System thickness, texture and detailing must still be selected for the actual temperatures, chemicals, traffic, drainage and cleaning procedures.

Designed for Demanding Conditions—not Every Concrete Floor

Urethane cement is most valuable where ordinary coatings would be exposed to combinations of moisture, temperature change, aggressive cleaning and physical wear. A dry retail floor or typical residential garage may not require this level of performance.

Most residential garages, basements and interior concrete floors do not require urethane cement. Decorative epoxy, flake or polyaspartic systems normally provide a more appropriate balance of appearance, performance and cost.

Questions About Urethane Cement and Urethane Mortar

The appropriate system depends on the temperatures, chemicals, moisture, traffic and cleaning procedures present in the facility.

What is urethane cement flooring?

Urethane cement is a heavy-duty resin flooring material made from a polyurethane binder, cement and graded aggregate. It may be installed as a self-levelling slurry, broadcast system or trowel-applied mortar, depending on the product and required performance.

Is urethane cement the same as an ordinary urethane coating?

No. A conventional urethane topcoat is a relatively thin protective layer. Urethane cement contains cement and aggregate and is installed as a substantially thicker flooring system intended for more demanding thermal, chemical and mechanical conditions.

How is urethane cement different from epoxy flooring?

Epoxy provides a versatile flooring platform for many commercial, industrial and residential environments. Urethane cement is often selected where rapid temperature changes, hot washdowns, persistent moisture and aggressive processing conditions create demands that may exceed those of a conventional epoxy system.

Where is urethane cement flooring normally used?

What is thermal shock?

Thermal shock occurs when a floor experiences a rapid temperature change, such as hot water or cooking oil contacting a cold slab. The resulting expansion and contraction can crack or delaminate an unsuitable floor. Urethane cement is commonly selected because its thermal behaviour is more compatible with concrete under these conditions.

Is urethane cement resistant to chemicals?

Urethane cement systems can resist many chemicals found in processing and cleaning environments, but resistance varies by product. The specific substance, concentration, temperature, exposure time and cleaning method should be compared with current manufacturer data.

Can urethane cement flooring be made slip-resistant?

Yes. Different aggregate sizes and application methods can create smooth, lightly textured or more aggressive slip-resistant finishes. The required traction should be balanced against cleaning because heavier textures generally take more effort to maintain.

Can it be installed over damp concrete?

Some urethane cement products tolerate higher substrate moisture than many conventional resin systems. That does not eliminate the need to assess the slab, water sources and vapour conditions. The selected product must be approved for the measured conditions.

Does damaged concrete need to be repaired first?

Yes. Unsound concrete, failed coatings, contamination, spalls, cracks and damaged joints must be evaluated before installation. Repairs, drain transitions, slopes and coves should be completed with materials compatible with the flooring system.

How long does urethane cement flooring take to install?

Is urethane cement suitable for residential floors?
