EXTERIOR CONCRETE COATING FAQ
Questions About Porch, Patio and Driveway Coatings
The recommended system depends on the concrete condition, weather exposure, traffic, drainage and desired appearance.
What type of coating can be used on exterior concrete?
Options can include acrylic coatings, polyurethane systems, polymer-modified resurfacing materials, decorative overlays and clear sealers. The product must be approved for the traffic, sunlight, moisture and temperature conditions of the specific surface.
Can epoxy be used on an outdoor patio or driveway?
Standard interior epoxy should not automatically be used outdoors because sunlight, moisture and temperature changes can affect its appearance and performance. Exterior concrete requires a complete system specifically approved for that exposure and traffic.
Is a concrete coating the same as a sealer?
No. A coating generally forms a coloured or clear film over the surface. A penetrating sealer enters the concrete and reduces water absorption without creating the same visible layer. Film-forming acrylic sealers provide another option with different appearance and maintenance characteristics.
Can old concrete be resurfaced instead of replaced?
Resurfacing may be practical when the slab remains sufficiently sound and stable. Minor pitting, surface erosion and suitable spalls can often be repaired. Extensive delamination, major settlement or structural deterioration may make replacement or more substantial repair necessary.
Can cracks be repaired before the coating is installed?
Many cracks can be prepared and repaired, but movement may cause them to return or reflect through the finished surface. Control joints, expansion joints and cracks associated with settlement require separate evaluation.
Can a coating fix a sunken or uneven driveway?
A surface coating cannot stabilize a settled slab or correct major elevation differences. The cause and extent of the movement should be assessed before cosmetic resurfacing is considered.
Can coating correct standing water?
Not by itself. Low areas, unsuitable slope and drainage problems may require concrete correction, drain work or another construction solution. Coating over standing-water areas can create maintenance and performance problems.
Are exterior concrete coatings slippery?
Smooth coatings and sealers can become slippery when wet. Aggregate or surface texture can be added where greater traction is required. The selected texture should also account for cleaning and, on patios, bare-foot comfort.
Will sunlight cause the coating to fade or yellow?
Exterior systems should use materials selected for ultraviolet exposure. Colour and sheen can still change over time, but using an exterior-rated, UV-resistant system reduces the risk associated with products intended only for interior use.
Can coatings withstand vehicle traffic?
Only products and system builds approved for vehicle traffic should be used on driveways. Turning tires, vehicle weight, road debris and de-icing salts create different demands from pedestrian use on a porch or patio.
Can you coat over an existing sealer or paint?
Only if the existing material is sound, compatible and properly prepared. Sealers can interfere with adhesion, and peeling or weak coatings normally need to be mechanically removed before resurfacing or recoating.
How is exterior concrete prepared?
Preparation may include pressure cleaning, mechanical grinding, shot blasting or other methods required by the selected system. Dirt, oils, failed coatings, curing compounds and weak concrete must be removed, and repairs completed before application.
How long does installation take?
Timing depends on the size of the area, coating removal, repairs, weather, system build and cure requirements. Exterior work also requires a suitable application window without rain or temperatures outside the product limits.
How should coated exterior concrete be maintained?
Regular cleaning removes organic debris, dirt and contaminants. The surface should be inspected for wear, cracks and localized damage. Some coating and sealer systems require periodic refreshing or recoating as part of normal maintenance.
